TAMPA, Hillsborough County, FL, September 10, 2026: Two drivers went to the hospital after a four-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 275 near the Howard Frankland Bridge Thursday morning. The collision temporarily shut down all southbound lanes and caused major delays for motorists heading toward St. Petersburg.
The Florida Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 11:10 a.m. as a Toyota Tundra entered southbound I-275 from the State Road 589 and State Road 60 area near the bridge approach.
Investigators said the Tundra’s driver, a 42-year-old St. Petersburg man, lost control for reasons still under investigation. The pickup moved onto the shoulder and hit a crash attenuator.
After the impact, the Tundra rotated back into the southbound lanes. A Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 71-year-old St. Petersburg man then hit the Tundra, and the Tundra overturned.
The crash also sent construction debris across the interstate. A Dodge Ram van and a Ford Bronco driving behind the initial vehicles then struck or drove through the debris.
FHP said the 42-year-old Tundra driver suffered serious injuries and went to a local hospital. The 71-year-old Silverado driver suffered minor injuries and also went to the hospital.
A 30-year-old Tampa man drove the Dodge Ram with a 30-year-old male passenger. Neither suffered injuries. A 31-year-old Tampa woman drove the Ford Bronco, and she did not suffer injuries.
Authorities had not identified the drivers and passengers by name at the time of publication.
Emergency crews closed all southbound lanes while investigators examined the crash and crews cleared damaged vehicles and debris. Tampa Police officers helped close access points to the bridge.
The shutdown caused heavy congestion for drivers traveling from Tampa toward Pinellas County. Officials advised motorists to expect delays and use alternate routes across Tampa Bay.
FHP said crews reopened the southbound lanes around 1:15 p.m., about two hours after the crash.
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate why the Toyota Tundra lost control before it hit the roadside barrier. Officials did not include any additional findings on the cause in the latest information reviewed for this article.
Investigators may change details as the investigation continues, and preliminary information does not represent a final determination of fault.
