SEFFNER, FL – April, 2026 – Hillsborough County Public Schools reported that an Armwood High School student, 17-year-old Elijah Battiste, died after a crash Saturday night in Seffner. Florida Highway Patrol said the collision occurred on State Road 574 near Chastain Road.
FHP said a Nissan Versa driven by a 40-year-old man was traveling eastbound on State Road 574, while Battiste’s Volkswagen Passat was traveling westbound. Troopers said the Nissan collided nearly head-on with the Volkswagen near Chastain Road.
Troopers reported both vehicles came to rest in the roadway, then the Volkswagen was struck by a Ford F-150. Investigators said the F-150 driver fled on foot and remains unidentified.
Troopers said both drivers from the initial collision were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, and Battiste later died from his injuries. FHP said it is unclear why the Nissan entered the opposing lane, and the search continues for the third driver.
