DAVENPORT, FL – June, 2026 – A fatal two-vehicle crash in Davenport is under investigation after deputies said distracted driving likely played a role, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash happened just before 2:30 p.m. on June 13 at the intersection of U.S. Highway 17/92 and Sunny Acres Road. PCSO said its Traffic Homicide Investigations Unit is reviewing the collision.
According to the report, evidence and witness statements indicate that a 37-year-old man driving a semi-truck was traveling southbound when he saw a Toyota Corolla traveling northbound. Deputies said the Toyota, driven by a 38-year-old man, drifted across the center line multiple times before crossing directly into the semi-truck’s path.
PCSO said the semi-truck driver attempted to brake and lost control before impact. The collision caused severe front-end damage to both vehicles. The Toyota driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies found a phone in the Toyota driver’s hand, indicating that distracted driving likely contributed to the crash. Investigators continue the investigation.
