DELRAY BEACH, Palm Beach County, FL, October 15, 2026: Eight people were transported to hospitals following a Delray Beach Turnpike seven-vehicle chain-reaction crash on southbound Florida’s Turnpike, Thursday morning. Two drivers sustained serious injuries and were classified as trauma alerts, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The collision temporarily shut down all southbound lanes near Atlantic Avenue and caused major traffic delays during the morning commute.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded to the crash shortly before 8:30 a.m. on southbound State Road 91, Florida’s Turnpike, near Atlantic Avenue (State Road 806).
FHP said the vehicles traveled southbound across multiple lanes when one vehicle triggered a chain-reaction collision. Investigators are still working to determine what caused it.
Seven vehicles were ultimately involved in the Delray Beach Turnpike crash. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue reported that the crash scene stretched about 300 yards along the roadway, showing how much the collision affected the area.
Authorities have not explained what caused the first vehicle to crash.
Palm Beach County Fire Rescue said eight drivers went to hospitals after the collision.
FHP said two drivers suffered serious injuries, and officials classified them as trauma alerts. Authorities had not released more information about their conditions at the time of the latest report.
Earlier reports said a box truck was among the vehicles involved.
Authorities have not publicly identified the injured motorists.
The crash initially blocked all southbound lanes and forced motorists to exit Florida’s Turnpike at Atlantic Avenue.
The closure caused heavy congestion across southern Palm Beach County. Earlier Thursday morning, officials said the shutdown affected about seven miles of the Turnpike between Boca Raton and Boynton Beach.
Emergency crews, FHP troopers, and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue personnel stayed at the scene as medics transported the injured and crews cleared damaged vehicles.
WPTV later reported that all southbound lanes had reopened.
The Florida Highway Patrol has not made a final determination about what caused the initial collision or who bears responsibility for the subsequent impacts. FHP said the investigation remains ongoing.
FHP said it also notified the State Warning Point. Officials had not announced citations or other contributing factors as of the latest update.
Because investigators are still working the case, readers should not treat preliminary information as a final determination of fault.
