BAY LAKE, Orange County, FL, October 27, 2026: The Orange County FHP crash involved a pickup truck that struck a marked Florida Highway Patrol vehicle Tuesday night on southbound State Road 429 in Orange County, seriously injuring an FHP trooper.
The trooper had parked the patrol car inside an active construction zone to assist with a lane closure when the collision occurred.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 9:12 p.m. near mile marker 6 in the Bay Lake area, close to Walt Disney World.
A 53-year-old Davenport man drove a 2026 Toyota Tundra southbound toward an active construction zone. An FHP trooper had stopped a marked patrol car in the outside lane ahead and activated its emergency lights.
FHP reported that the Toyota driver did not move over for the patrol vehicle. The pickup then struck the rear of the cruiser.
Photos that FHP released after the crash showed extensive damage to both vehicles.
The crash seriously injured the trooper. Emergency crews airlifted the trooper to a hospital for treatment.
FHP later said the trooper remained hospitalized in stable condition.
Emergency personnel also took the Toyota driver to Celebration Hospital. Initial reports described his injuries as serious. A later FHP update characterized them as non-life-threatening.
Authorities had not publicly identified either person in the reports reviewed for this article.
The trooper had positioned the FHP cruiser in an active construction zone to support a lane closure operation.
Investigators said the trooper had stopped the patrol vehicle with its emergency lights activated when the Toyota Tundra approached from behind.
The Orange County FHP crash highlights the dangers that law enforcement officers, construction workers, emergency responders, and other roadside personnel face while working near moving traffic.
Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles later noted that the SR 429 collision marked one of two serious incidents along the roadway within five days. The crashes renewed attention on Florida’s Move Over requirements.
Florida Statutes § 316.126 contains the state’s Move Over Law.
Florida law requires drivers approaching certain stopped emergency, service, utility, construction, maintenance, or disabled vehicles to change lanes away from them when they can safely do so.
When traffic conditions prevent a safe lane change, drivers must reduce their speed as required by law.
Following the SR 429 crash, FHP reminded motorists that drivers who cannot safely change lanes should slow to 20 mph below the posted speed limit. Move Over violations can result in fines, fees, and points on a driver’s license.
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the collision.
A later FHP update indicated that charges remained pending. Authorities had not announced a final charging decision when the latest information reviewed for this article became available.
Investigators may release additional findings as they complete their review. Until then, preliminary information should not serve as a final determination of legal responsibility.
