BROOKSVILLE, FL – August 2025 – A man sitting near a Florida road suffered traumatic injuries when a passing driver chose someone at random to run over, according to investigators.
It happened around 10:40 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, along Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in the South Brooksville suburb, and the victim was “seated in a chair” when struck, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office said in an Aug. 25 news release.
Witnesses report the driver then jumped from the car and “ran into the woods,” officials said.
“Deputies located the suspect vehicle, a gold Toyota Corolla LE, still on scene. The vehicle was parked on the sidewalk,” the sheriff’s office said.
“The victim, 74-year-old Brooksville man, sustained severe injuries to both legs and head trauma. Due to the extent of his injuries, he was airlifted to a trauma hospital for emergency treatment.”
The victim’s identity and condition were not released.
An investigation revealed the car owner’s 36-year-old son was likely driving at the time of the crash, officials said.
A search of the area was ongoing when that man, Quaze Lavarn Simmons, emerged from woods south of the crash scene, officials said.
He was “wet, covered in dirt and debris,” and described himself as being “scared,” the sheriff’s office said.
“Simmons initially told detectives he lost control of the vehicle and ran in fear of his mother’s reaction to the crash. However, video surveillance obtained in the area revealed Simmons accelerated across traffic lanes directly toward the victim. At no time were the vehicle’s brake lights observed, nor was there any evidence of the driver losing control,” the sheriff’s office said.
