ORMOND BEACH, Volusia County, FL, August 13, 2026:
A 57-year-old man from Jacksonville died early Thursday in a fiery crash involving two tractor-trailers on southbound Interstate 95 in Ormond Beach. The collision shut down the southbound lanes for several hours as emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene.
What happened on Interstate 95 in Ormond Beach?
The Florida Highway Patrol said the crash happened shortly before 3 a.m. near mile marker 276 on southbound I-95.
Investigators said a 59-year-old man from Cape Canaveral struck a deer while driving a tractor-trailer. The impact disabled the truck in the outside travel lane. The driver turned on the hazard lights and left the vehicle stopped on the roadway.
A second tractor-trailer, driven by the 57-year-old Jacksonville man, traveled southbound toward the disabled truck. FHP said he couldn’t slow down in time and hit the rear of the stopped tractor-trailer.
Why did the tractor-trailer catch fire?
The approaching tractor-trailer burst into flames after the impact. The Jacksonville driver suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene, FHP said.
The driver of the disabled tractor-trailer did not get hurt. Authorities have not publicly identified either driver by name.
How did the crash affect traffic on I-95?
The crash closed all southbound lanes of Interstate 95 near the scene. Officials diverted traffic off the interstate at Exit 278 near Old Dixie Highway while investigators handled the case and crews cleared the roadway.
The closure lasted through much of Thursday morning. FOX 35 reported that crews reopened all southbound lanes around noon.
Florida Department of Transportation traffic cameras showed emergency personnel and wreckage along the interstate during the closure.
What is known about the investigation?
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal crash. Investigators have said the first tractor-trailer stopped after hitting a deer and had its hazard lights on when the second truck approached.
Authorities have not released additional findings about the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
