How Drivers, Pedestrians and Cyclists Coexist

Florida is home to over 20 million residents. This means millions of drivers, pedestrians and cyclists are sharing our roadways. Many people drive to work or school each day, while some enjoy walking or biking. While sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes and the rules of the road were designed to keep all travelers safe, there are still accidents every day.

So Far in 2019…

In the first half of 2019, there have been 172,565 Florida motor vehicle crashes. About a quarter of these crashes involved pedestrians, 71 percent of which were fatal. About 17 percent of this year’s accidents involved cyclists, of which 23 percent were fatal.

Contributing Factors to Florida car Accidents, Bicycle Accidents and Pedestrian Accidents:

  • Many cities have not properly planned and allocated space for bicyclists and pedestrians.
  • Poor lighting along roadways.
  • Drivers becoming more distracted than ever.
  • Today’s drivers becoming more defensive and hurried.
  • Drivers not being cautious when they see people walking or biking in or along the road.

As a community that relies so heavily on driving, we must be more aware of our surroundings, and be respectful of those we share our roadways with.
