Common Causes of Motorcycle Accidents

Common Causes of Motorcycle Accidents
On any given day, it is not surprising to see a motorcycle on the roadways. Motorcycles are a popular mode of transportation here in Tampa and all over Florida. As much fun as it can be to drive a motorcycle or ride on the back of one, it does not come without danger. Being in an accident on a motorcycle can be extremely dangerous and lead to serious injuries. While you can never fully prevent accidents because the behavior of other drivers is beyond your control, knowing the common causes of motorcycle accidents can help you be on the lookout for potential danger.

Left Turns

The most common type of motorcycle accident is caused by drivers making a left turn in front of a motorcyclist. The driver likely has misjudged the distance between the motorcycle and the vehicle, misjudged the speed the motorcyclist was traveling, or maybe just did not see the motorcyclist at all. The best way to try and prevent this accident is to simply be on the lookout for it. Be on the lookout when you are approaching an intersection, when another car’s left turn signal goes on, or when nearing a driveway or parking lot.

Rear End Accidents

Another common type of motorcycle accident occurs when a vehicle driver rear ends a motorcycle. Even at reduced speeds, the damages and injuries that result from these accidents can be severe. Again, you can not control the behavior of other drivers, but you can take actions to protect yourself. Make sure that your break lights are in working order and avoid making sudden stops, if possible.

Car Doors Opening

Another danger to motorcycle riders is car doors opening unexpectedly from the side of the road. Driving past a line of parked cars presents the risk that there is still someone inside a vehicle waiting to get out. If a person in the car does not look or see you com ing, he or she could swing open a car door without giving a motorcyclist time to stop.

Speeding

Driving a motorcycle can feel like you are flying down the road. Speeding on a motorcycle, while tempting, is never a good idea. The faster that a vehicle is moving, the longer it takes for a vehicle to stop. If a sudden obstruction appears in the road or a vehicle around you stops short, it is less likely that you will be able to stop in time or make the necessary corrections to avoid an accident.
