Mike Valen is a graduate of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, and The University of Florida College of Law. During his third year of law school, Mike attended Florida State University Law School on scholarship, was published in The Florida State University Law Review, and interned for the Florida House of Representatives, Committee on Commerce, where he worked with elected Representatives and staff members providing bill analysis and drafting legislation involving personal injury law.

Prior to attending law school, Mike served as an Officer in the United States Navy, flying F-14 Tomcats in Fighter Squadron Fourteen embarked aboard the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy. Mike is a veteran of Operation Desert Storm, and later served as a jet flight instructor in Pensacola, Florida.

Mike has tried well over a hundred cases at the trial court level, and has argued dozens of appellate cases with numerous published opinions. Prior to joining Dennis Hernandez and Associates, Mike was a member of the Martinez Odom trial team that won numerous multi-million dollar jury verdicts involving traumatic brain injuries, aviation crashes, construction zone crashes, car and trucking accidents, product liability and wrongful death cases.

Mike is admitted to practice in the U.S. Middle District, and is a member of The Florida Bar, the Hillsborough County Bar Association, the Florida Justice Association, and the Tampa Bay Trial Lawyers Association.
