Teen Driver Challenge Educates Traffic Safety To Youth

Teen Driver Safety Week is a very special time for High School Students in Seffner. With the assistance of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, a program was put into place to educate teens on the dangers of distracted driving, and other hazardous situations on the road. Statistics show that a teen driver is four times more likely to get into an accident behind the wheel. The goal is to help new drivers gain more experience in a controlled environment, so that they are prepared if and when a real world situation occurs. Master Deputy Jerry Carey who runs the Teen Driver Challenge told Bay News 9, “Those are all issues that take their eyes off of the road and put them in danger when they’re in traffic, so they learn things like evasive driving with respect to hazards on the roadway.  How to properly back and navigate, and to minimize those distractions in the car and deal with situations that they may encounter out there on the roadway.” The  program is designed as a defensive driving challenge and gives kids a fun and educational way to learn how to avoid distractions and become safer on the road. If you would like to learn more about this program, contact the Hillsborough County Sheriffs Office or your local Department of Transportation for more information.
